Advocacy Update

The advocacy program continues to make gains on our national advocacy agenda.  A dedicated committee made up of Carmen Abela, Richard Arthurs, Brian Brown Stephen Hack, Jodie Lobana and Shelley Pelkey, have been focusing on moving our relationships and positioning our profession with our core advocacy targets namely, the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), the Director’s College, CPA Canada, Government, OSFI and the OSC.

In addition, there is strong communication and coordination with chapters and national with regular touch points on our activities along with the leveraging our one IIA Canada efforts for increasing awareness of who we are, what we do and why internal auditing is important to good governance.  As a result of these efforts I can highlight some of the advocacy wins over the last year, keeping in mind that there are many successes to talk about.  For example, we participated with the ICD and CPA Canada in a joint webinar on “Ensuring Boards get Value from Internal Audit” on March 3, 2016 and have secured ongoing participation as a “CAE in Residence” for the ICD’s Audit Committee Effectiveness Course.   The webinar will refer to a joint CPA and IIA Canada white paper on the updated “20 Questions Audit Committee’s Should be Asking of Internal Audit", recently published and available at the Thought Leadership section of www.iiacanada.ca.

In addition, we have established ongoing communication and coordination with CPA Canada on a variety of topics including education and research.  As Chair of the Committee I would like to thank the entire team for the efforts and extend my thank you to all of the Chapters for their ongoing support of advocacy in Canada.
