Training Topic:
Hunting for Hackers: Auditing Breach Detection Capabilities
Would you know if your organization has been hacked? Publicly available data suggests that the odds are not in your favor. Over 70% of breached organizations learned they were hacked from a third party, and an average of 205 days passed between the breach and the third-party notification or self-detection. Internal Audit has a key role to play in evaluating existing breach detection controls through breach detection-focused audits, including leveraging new “threat hunting” techniques to identify signs of an ongoing or past breach.
In this session, you will learn from an experienced incident responder and threat hunter about some of the challenges organizations face in detecting breaches, and why so many organizations fail to self-detect breaches. You’ll also learn what threat hunting is, and how threat hunting can be leveraged in an internal audit context to evaluate an organization’s breach-detection capabilities and identify signs of a breach. The session will include walkthroughs of example testing that can be performed, including reviewing network traffic and system process listings for signs of compromise.
