March 2017 - IIA Fraud Symposium

On March 10, 2017, event day of the IIA Fraud Symposium in Philadelphia there were 75 internal auditors and fraud experts in attendance at the Exelon building.   IIA extends a special thank you to its host and to several volunteers and speakers that contributed to a successful learning event.

Bruce Dorris of ACFE opens on interviewing soft skills. The training was interactive and engaging.  Those in attendence asked Mr. Dorris several questions to share his input.

Mssrs. Barry Sabin and Ryan Andrews of Latham Watkins lead a valuable walk-through the latest issuances of anti-corruption guidance from the DOJ and the SEC regarding effective compliance programs and why they are important. Their presentation also incorporated current trends in anti-corruption enforcement.

Matt Kelly of Radical Compliance provides examples of the basic fraud triangle in many variations, shares identifiable causes, and preventative and mitigative controls.  Kelly advises a 'full-stop moment' when the practitioner observes a control break down in order to take action.

Richard Bistrong delivers a meaningful presentation about needs of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act audit program. There was significant discussion of control that can breakdown, internal control measures that can be improved and motivates the attendees to employ a thoughtful means of monitoring internal controls.

Last, Bradley J. Bondi of Cahill’s litigation practice group, shares a practitioner's perspective of the outside Fraud Investigation,  such as communications with the client's BOD, audit committees, special committees and officers and directors and critical conversations involving the DOJ and SEC's position towards enforcement, significant litigation, and internal investigations on  accounting, compliance, and governance issues.

If you missed the annual Fraud Symposium, please note that there will be others.  The Philadelphia Chapter of the Insitute of Internal Auditors holds two conferences on fraud per year, visit the Training & Events page of the Chapter Website for these and more upcoming training opportunities.
