Certifications, Recognitions and Awards

Congratulations to the newly certified members of our Chapter!  At our May 2021 meeting, we recognized the 19 Certified Internal Auditors (CIA) and 1 Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) that were earned this year.  Each of these credentialed professionals will also receive a certificate from the IIA and a lapel pin from the Chapter.

IIA Rock Stars may be new to internal audit but are recognized by their colleagues for innovation, enthusiasm, and command of IIA standards. The Chapter recognized two Rock Stars this year: Zainab Makki (BlueCross-BlueShield) and Nakia Robinson (Wayne State University).

Three of our outgoing board members were honored with Awards of Dedicated Service to the profession.  Each of these long-serving honorees (Christine Dobrovich, Erin Erickson and Dr. Bob Okopny) had been involved with the IIA for many years.

Academic Relations

Drawing new talent is key to developing the internal audit profession. Our Chapter continues to work with local colleges and universities on ways we can support academic curriculum and raising student awareness.

Internal Audit Awareness Month

May has been known as International Internal Audit Awareness month for several years. This year, the State of Michigan recognized the contributions of internal auditors to the success of organizations and the global economy at large, by officially naming May 2021 Internal Audit Awareness Month. Show your IA pride!

Each year, the Detroit IIA Chapter invites business students from colleges and universities in and beyond southeast Michigan to submit an essay on an internal audit-related topic for an opportunity to receive a $2,000 scholarship award.

The topic for 2021:  Due to the pandemic many companies have gone to a “work from home” or “virtual” environment.  How do you see this impacting the internal audit function?  What are some of the challenges and opportunities you feel this situation could present to the internal audit function?”

Congratulations to this year’s scholars!

·         Ryley Freeman – Saginaw Valley State (Undergraduate)

Financial Position

The Chapter financials continue to be strong, with resources to support our future programs, scholarships and member services.

A Note of Thanks from our President

Thank you to each valued member!  Your participation in meetings, webinars, and the spring training helped make 2020-21 a very successful year.  We could not have done it without you!

Please join me in applauding the Detroit Chapter’s 2020-21 Board of Governors who have remained steady, but adaptable, and committed to our members as we navigated the past twelve months.  I appreciate all of the support.
