 The Institute of Internal Auditors of Fort Worth Chapter is a professional association of internal auditors. Our Chapter meets monthly from August to May. We offer local training, education, and networking via our meetings and events. Please join us for a great lunch, networking opportunities and CPEs. Most meetings are held at the City Club of Fort Worth.

Our September meeting is a breakfast meeting and will take place on Wednesday, September 18th, with Steve Geophert presenting on Value Added Auditing:

“Value Added Auditing”

The challenge for Internal Audit to be “value-added” is integral to the success of the function in today’s world.  In this session you will learn some of the innovative approaches United Airlines implemented to create and add value to its organization’s bottom-line.  Mr. Goepfert will take you on a guided tour of the best practices used by their IA Department to add value and provide top-notch assurance services.  This address will highlight specific audit tools and techniques to add value including:
 
  • Third-party vendor audits
  • Employee benefits exams
  • Construction audits
  • Officer compensation and expense reviews
  • Recruiting and retaining the best staff
  • Using QARs to assess value-added practices
                                                
Steve was the Vice President - Internal Audit (Chief Auditor) for United Airlines in Chicago, Illinois until his retirement in October 2013. He assumed the role after the merger of United and Continental in October 2010. He had previously been Chief Auditor at Continental Airlines for 21 years. 
 
He was the 2006-2007 Chairman of the Board for the Institute of Internal Auditors, Inc. (IIA). Steve served on the IIA’s Executive Committee for 6 years (2003-09) and on the global IIA Board for 7 years. He is a past President of the Houston Chapter (1999-2000) and served on its Board for 17 years. Steve also served the global IIA as Chairman of the Professional Certifications Board (PCB) for 4 years (2012-16). In 2012, Steve was inducted into the inaugural class of the IIA’s American Hall of Distinguished Audit Practitioners.  He was recognized in 2013 with the Victor Brink award for distinguished service to the IIA.
 
Steve has held industry audit posts including Chairman of the International Association of Airline Internal Auditors (IAAIA) in 1996 and Chairman of the Air Transport Association of America (ATA) Audit Panel in 2003.
 
Steve is a member of the Southern Illinois University (SIU) Foundation Board of Directors (2014-present) and joined its Executive Committee and became Chairman of the Finance Committee (oversight for Audit, Budget and ERM) in 2017.
 
A CIA, CPA (inactive) and CRMA, he started his career with the Big 8 firm of Coopers & Lybrand, where he worked for over 5 years. Steve graduated with highest honors from SIU in 1975 and was selected as the Outstanding Senior in the College of Business. He was inducted into the SIU College of Business Hall of Fame in 2010.
