About the Speaker
Derek Tubania graduated from the University of Hawaii with a BBA in accounting and began working at Ernst & Young as a staff auditor. He obtained his CPA and started his career as a Special Agent with the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI). Derek has been with IRS-CI for just under 20 years. Throughout the years, he has focused mainly on income tax cases, and has worked a few money laundering and structuring cases.
Derek will be discussing the various tax related criminal statutes the IRS typically uses to prosecute its cases. He will also discuss the structuring and money laundering statutes and how they relate to IRS-CI. Finally, he will end with some examples of adjudicated cases and how the IRS proves certain elements utilizing the tax statutes.
