Event Details

There will be a panel of speakers from area companies, offering their career advice and interview tips.  While there is a big emphasis on the students, this meeting is tailored to benefit all business professionals – from students/new hires to CFO’s, from job seekers to the employed.  The goal is that each person will take something away from this meeting to benefit his or her career.  This will also be a good opportunity to network with several students from area campuses and to market your company to potential job candidates/interns.  This has been a very well attended event, as it attracted over 85 attendees last year, most of which were students from UW-Madison, UW-Whitewater, Edgewood College, and more!

Speakers: Panel Discussion

  • Mike Bress, Vice President & Controller at WPS Community Bank
  • Jay Doescher, President of SoftSwitching Technologies/Rockwell Automation
  • Bruce Hamilton, Owner of Hamilton CPA, LLC
  • Colin Shepard, Internal Audit Manager at Madison Gas & Electric

About the Speakers

Mike Bress - WPS Community Bank
Mike has spent almost 25 years in the accounting and financial arena, working for large and small organizations, private and public organizations, and non-profit, for-profit, and governmental organizations.  In addition to working in accounting and finance roles from payables processing to CFO, he has consulted for all of these types of organizations and started several businesses along the way.  Some might say he has no direction at all, but Mike would prefer to say that his career has been a continuing process of finding the next interesting, professional challenge that expands his skills, broadens his impact, and sounds fun.  His varied background gives him great insight into how to manage a career successfully (and, more importantly, what not to do).

Specifically, Mike has an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Economics and an MBA from Georgetown University.  Professionally, he started his career as the CFO of a submarine, traveled the world with Electronic Data Systems as a jack-of-all-trades accounting and financial analyst, and continued traveling the world as a corporate finance consultant and corporate development/venture capital leader at Andersen Consulting/Accenture.  He stopped traveling at Capital One Bank as the leader of balance sheet planning, strategy, analytics, and communications, moved to Madison to be both a Group CFO and head of Corporate Finance at CUNA Mutual Group, then became an entrepreneur, starting concurrent businesses in financial services strategy consulting, cloud-based data analytics outsourcing, and part-time CFO services for local organizations.  He recently decided to return to the corporate world as the senior executive responsible for all finance, operations, and technology functions for a start-up bank in Madison called WPS Community Bank, FSB (he missed the people management and talent development).

Jason Doescher - Softswitching Technologies/Rockwell Automation
Jason is the President of SoftSwitching Technologies (SST) a manufacturer of power quality and power distribution products, which was purchased by Rockwell Automation ( NYSE: ROK) in 2012. SST is a UW Madison spinoff with technology licensed from WARF. The technology is critical to the SEMI conductor industry, which requires SST to have operations throughout Asia. Previously, Mr. Doescher was Corporate Controller for Advanced Separation & Process Systems (a leading provider of modular and field-erected process systems with funding from SWIB), and an auditor with Virchow Krause & Company (now Baker Tilly). Mr. Doescher received his B.B.A. in accounting from the University of Wisconsin and is a licensed CPA in Wisconsin.

Bruce Hamilton,  CPA, CMA - Hamilton CPA, LLC
Bruce is the owner of Hamilton CPA, LLC in Janesville, WI.  His firm provides accounting & assurance, tax planning, compliance and preparation, and management consulting services to small and mid-sized companies and entrepreneurial individuals.

Prior to starting his CPA firm, Bruce held positions as chief financial officer, comptroller and budget director for a variety of manufacturing firms and started his career as a cost accountant for a major agri-business firm.  He has held seminars on capital budgeting & forecasting, cash management and taught computer science courses in the Wisconsin vocational-technical education system.

Bruce received his B.Sc. degree from Iowa State University and did graduate work at DePaul University in Chicago, and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL.  He has been a member of the IMA since 1977.  He is the Immediate Past President of the Mid-America Council of IMA and has served the President of the Madison Chapter twice.  He is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s, and a past Board Member of the Iowa State University Alumni Association.
