Internal audit departments will continue to evolve from a low maturity to high maturity with the ability to deliver value with data analytics. Internal audit will have to evolve to reach a higher level of maturity, not just with staffing and skills, but with system functionality and opportunities to provide additional value. This maturity process requires an agility that incorporates a natural level of disruption to internal audit by external and internal forces. 

This presentation will give examples of data analytic strategy for internal auditors and will provide real examples a different maturity levels to help manage expectations of leadership and to increase their value proposition and agility. It will also give examples of how innovation is disrupting the internal audit profession. 

This session will help you to:

  • Hear examples of high value data analytic usage at various levels of maturity
  • Understand how data analytics will impact required resource capabilities
  • Become aware of trends identifying disruption to the internal audit profession

Richard Arthurs.pngRichard Arthurs 

Richard Arthurs, CPA, CMA, MBA, CIA, CRMA, CFE, QIAL, is a Partner and MNP’s National Data and Information Dynamics Leader, based in the Calgary office. Richard has more than 25 years of experience assisting complex global organizations with their governance, risk management, internal audit, IT audit, data analytics, ethics and compliance needs. He has deep industry experience in the utilities / energy, consumer goods, retail, technology, telecommunications, not-for-profit and public sectors. 

Leveraging his experience leading audit and risk projects in more than 40 countries, Richard has a global perspective on the issues businesses face. He has worked with renowned organizations and has a proven track record of achieving cost-effective value-added solutions to manage priority risks and improve business processes and controls.

Prior to joining MNP, Richard served as a Global Internal Audit and Risk Management Director for General Mills Inc. with oversight of over 100 country operations. In this role, he helped develop a global data analytics strategy for the Internal Audit function. Most recently, he was Chief Audit Executive and Vice President of Risk Management and Compliance for a Canadian subsidiary of one of the largest utilities and renewable energy operators in the U.S., Berkshire Hathaway Energy Canada.

Richard is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), qualifying as a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) in 2003, and holds the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) designations. He was the first Canadian to receive the Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership (QIAL) designation from the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Richard is currently the Chair of the Canadian Board of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA Canada). He is also a facilitator of ERM and Internal Audit training for the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), CPA Canada, and the Canadian Electrical Association (CEA).

Carlo Lisi is the Senior Manager of the Audit Analytics Team at TD Bank. He joined TD in Jan 2009 after 8 years at RBC for an opportunity to start an analytics initiative within the Internal Audit Division. During his tenure at TD he created the CAATTs/Audit Analytics team which has grown from one person in 2009 to fifteen in 2017 and matured the analytics from adhoc data extracts to advanced analytics and continuous monitoring. 

Prior to this Carlo spent 8 years at RBC, with roles in Middle Office as a market risk analyst for FX products and as an  Audit Manager CAATTs. Prior to RBC, Carlo spent six years teaching mathematics to undergraduate students.

​Carlo volunteers as a math mentor at the University of Toronto and York University mentoring mathematics students. He is an avid machine learning enthusiast spending a lot of his free time programming in Python and R and participating in machine learning competitions.
