Topic: Conflict Minerals - Regulations and Practical considerations for the Audit Community
Presentation Overview: On August 22, 2012, The Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) approved the final rule requiring registrants to disclose their use of conflict minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold, and their derivatives) that originated in the region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This rule spells out significant reporting and certification requirements for SEC-registered companies’ supply chains. The first Conflict Minerals Report for all companies is due on May 31, 2014, for the calendar year January 1 - December 31, 2013. Because all products manufactured in 2013 are subject to the disclosure, action is being taken now with readiness assessments, due diligence and audit and reporting preparation.
While the provision may sound obscure, many of the “conflict minerals” are commonly used in consumer goods and industrial manufacturing.
