Event Details

​​Cost recovery reviews of construction contracts can save organizations conservatively 1 - 3% of the overall cost on capital projects and boost IA’s value to an organization. During this training session attendees will learn about  common contract documents and forms, inherent risks in the construction industry, and the controls you should have in place to mitigate those risks.  Attendees will also learn about the types of construction contracts and their accompanying risks, the bidding and award process, controlling construction costs, as well as the payment and closeout process. In addition, various types of construction contract audits will be covered and attendees will learn when a construction contract audit is necessary and how projects should be selected. Throughout this session the audience will see firsthand the common mistakes, fraudulent activity, and errors that occur in construction projects of all sizes and in various industries.

Speaker Information

​​Matt R. Gardner, CCA, CICA is a practice leader for construction audit services for Honkamp Krueger & Co.  Matt has significant expertise managing a wide variety of private and public companies in the risk advisory suite of services. This includes various cost recovery engagements for the world's largest organization (Walmart Stores, Inc.), several other Fortune 100 companies, and various colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe.
Matt has a broad range of experience in construction contract audit and CAM analyses across several industries including retail, manufacturing, entertainment, healthcare and transportation. He also has in-depth experience in cost segregation studies, contract compliance and verification, risk analysis/management, variance analysis, SAS70 and SSAE16 reviews, agreed upon procedures reviews, budget and budget variance analysis, cost engineering, and contract administration.
He specializes in Construction contract audits, CAM Reviews, Lease Analysis, SAS70, SSAE16 reviews, cost recovery reviews. He has a B.S. in finance from St. Louis University and is a Certified Construction Auditor (CCA) and Certified Internal Controls Auditor (CICA).  He is also a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and the National Association of Construction Auditors (NACA).​
