For an audit shop to thrive, it needs to have leadership take place from everywhere in the organization, from the entry level auditor to the CAE. From the upbeat auditor who convinces her peers to study and obtain the CIA with her to the Audit Executive who takes a stance to defend his team's findings, leadership needs to be expressed everywhere in an audit shop.

Making a difference through internal audit takes dedication, an understanding of our roles, and a clear focus on client needs before they are even expressed. Wherever you are in the Audit Shop, you can make a difference through initiative and leadership.

Jean-François Riel
Director General - Audit
Department of National Defence

Jean-François Riel has been working in the field of audit, consulting and risk management for 25 years. He developed an excellent reputation as a leader in making a difference on people, organizations and processes. His clients included many organizations in the public and private sector. After completing his MBA at the University of Ottawa, he worked as a management consultant for Young & Wiltshire. He was then recruited by the federal government as an analyst working for the Chief Review Services at National Defence.

He then worked at Consulting and Audit Canada for many years as a team leader and later as an audit manager where he provided auditing, consulting, facilitation as well as risk management services to more than two dozen departments and government agencies. His career path then led him to join the Public Service Commission as the Director of Professional Practices before becoming the Executive Director of Internal Audit at Fisheries and Oceans. He is currently the Director General of Audit at National Defence where he manages the internal audit function in one of the largest and most complex organizations in Canada.
