Returning healthcare items to vendors should be as easy as returning items to department stores. Yet, systemic flaws in the client/vendor relationship and incomplete processes within the healthcare organization often mean significant dollar losses each year by healthcare systems. These are easily and inexpensively preventable losses through the establishment of an effective returned goods process which tracks items from the hospital department, to the shipping dock, to the posted credit by Accounts Payable. This session looks at why returns refunds never make it onto a hospital account, what an effective returns process looks like, and how departments should work together to ensure procedures are in place to efficiently manage returned items, reduce research time, and receive credits in a timely manner.

10:50 am - 11:40 am - Preparing for ICD - 10 Implementation through Process Improvements
Presented by: Peggy Meli, RHIA, PhD, LHRM, Specialist Master, Deloitte & Touche LLP; Timothy R. Brock, PhD, CPT, CEO, The Institute 4 Worthy Performance LLC
Processes Improvement (PI) methodologies to streamline the coding and Health Information Management (HIM) document management for ICD-10 Implementation processes are being used by various health systems. Process mapping, as a part of PI, allows the HIM department or other department to spotlight time consuming or wasteful processes, streamlines work processes, define controls and allows for standardization of controls across a large healthcare system. Additional benefits include promotion of shared values with process partners while building consensus. Three Instructive ICD-10 Implementation process improvements will be shared. PI improves communication and partnering with the control point owners the process problems and opportunities for change. This technique may be completed rapidly for short processes and is easily demonstrated with a clear deliverable which adds value.
