Last year, according to, more than 5,500 companies around the world issued sustainability reports, up from about 800 a decade ago. Statistics show that 83% of people will trust a company more if it is socially responsible (USA Today) and 90% of young professionals would prefer to work for an environmentally friendly employer (MonsterTRAK Survey). Having a sustainability program is advantageous from both a customer as well as recruiting perspective. Given the importance of maintaining a socially responsible company it follows that a company should provide assurance that their sustainability claims are accurate. Internal auditors are professionally qualified to assess risk and evaluate controls around business processes. As such – they are well suited to provide assurance regarding sustainability organizations to prevent reputational risk. The can verify the key performance indicators and data within CSR reports.
