ACL fundamentals

The Tulsa Chapter of the IIA, in support of the Tulsa ACL User Group, is offering the following ACL training:
Program description: This course is intended as an introduction to ACL and basic script writing, comparable to ACL’s 105 and 201 courses. This is a beginner to intermediate level course, whereby participants will learn ACL commands and functions, and the use of the ACL Interface. The course utilizes the best practices developed by Michael Keiffer and covers key components of a successful ACL project.
Learning objectives:
  • Basic fundamentals of how ACL works.
  • How to access data with ACL.
  • How to perform basic data integrity verification steps with ACL once an ACL table has been built.
  • How to write expressions in ACL to assist with the data integrity verification process.
  • How to use functions in ACL to write more powerful functions.
  • How to use the different ACL commands and ACL expressions to perform data analysis.
  • Basic scripting procedures.
  • Best practices using specific, real-life examples.
This course is appropriate for Auditors, Audit Seniors, Audit Managers, IT auditors and any accountant who wishes to utilize ACL for data analysis and operational/financial insight.
Program Level and Prerequisites: None.
Advance preparation/delivery method: This is an instructor led classroom setting group. Users are expected to provide their own laptop computers with ACL desktop version 9.1 or greater.  (Educational versions of ACL are available with some books.)

Michael Keiffer is an independent data analysis consultant skilled in using ACL, both in practice and as an instructor.  Michael has over 16 years of extensive experience with data-mining, data analysis consulting and training, fraud detection and investigations, and compliance auditing. He has worked in the banking and financial services, healthcare, gaming/casino, retail, and airline/travel industries. Michael has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Arizona State University; is a CPA, CIA, and CISA; and became an ACDA in 2007.
