 Director, Risk Management and Assurance

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (the “Port”) is responsible for the stewardship of federal port lands at the Port of Vancouver. Its mandate is to enable Canada’s trade through the Port of Vancouver, while protecting the environment and considering local communities. The Port is governed by an independent Board of Directors and is accountable to the federal minister of transport under the Canada Marine Act.

Employing almost 500 people, the Port operates in an environment that has a much more complex strategic agenda than its headcount alone would indicate. As one of the world’s most diversified ports and a significant part of British Columbia’s and Canada’s dynamic gateway for trade and tourism, the Port of Vancouver generates an estimated $9.7 billion in GDP and represents a major economic force that underpins the strength of the Canadian economy through international trade.

A career progression for the former Director has created an opportunity for a fresh perspective from a new Director, Risk Management & Assurance (Director, RM&A). With a management reporting line to the CFO and a direct reporting line to the Chair of the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors and to the CEO, the new Director, RM&A will lead and manage the organization’s risk management and internal audit functions. The Director will work with the Executive team and senior leaders across the organisation to lead the development of the organization’s risk register and will oversee the execution of an enterprise-wide risk-based audit plan. Collaborating with colleagues across the organization on process improvement opportunities identified by the audit process, the new Director will also ensure ongoing compliance with VFPA’s Internal Audit Charter.

A hands-on role with a small team (a Manager, Internal Audit and an Analyst), the Director, Risk Management & Assurance oversees about six audits annually, three conducted with the two internal resources and three outsourced to a professional services firm, when specialized skills are required. Results of these audits are presented to the President & CEO and CFO along with the Chair of the Audit Committee. The new Director, RM&A will present to and interact with the full Board of Directors regularly. Identifying opportunities for process improvement through each audit and providing recommendations to the head of business process optimization is also a key element of this role. While ensuring compliance is an important element of this role, the mandate is leveraging team collaboration to understand, minimize and mitigate risk while enabling internal process optimization.

You bring a breadth of industry exposure either in complex businesses or internal audit, risk and compliance practice at a consulting firm. Exposure to real estate, construction, transportation, and/or mining industries or experience with major infrastructure risks and compliance will be highly valued. You are highly professional, comfortable working independently, able to relate well at all levels of an organization - including making presentations to an experienced Board - and calm under pressure. Good judgment, emotional maturity and a reassuring style will contribute to success in this role.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is dedicated to employment equity and a workplace reflective of the diversity of our community.
